Polkadot is a Proof-of-Stake blockchain platform that launched its mainnet in 2020. Polkadot raised funds for development through multiple token sales, the first of which happened in October of 2017. The Polkadot token sales were conducted by Web3 Foundation, a Switzerland-based organization.
There were three DOT token sales. The public initial coin offering in 2017 was followed by two private token sales that were conducted in 2019 and 2020, respectively. Since Web3 Foundation hasn’t disclosed exactly how much it raised through the token sales, we can only provide an estimate that Polkadot raised more than $200 million in funding through its token sales.
Note: In August of 2020, DOT was redenominated after a community vote. In practice, this meant that the number of DOT held by every DOT holder increased by 100. This was done by changing how many Plancks (the smallest unit of account on the Polkadot blockchain) constitute one DOT. The total number of Plancks was not changed.
Key dates, project details, and price data pertaining to the Polkadot ICO:
During the public token sale in 2017, the Polkadot ICO price was approximately $0.29 per coin. This DOT ICO price takes into account the DOT redenomination that happened in August 2020. The DOT price during the July 2020 token sale was about $1.25 per coin, if we take into account the DOT redenomination.
The Polkadot price reached as high as $55 in November 2021, which means that Polkadot ICO participants potentially saw the value of their DOT rise significantly after the token sale. The Polkadot ecosystem has also seen significant growth thanks to parachain auctions.
The Polkadot ICO started on October 15, 2017 and ran until October 27, 2017.
The Polkadot ICO that was conducted in October 2017 raised approximately $145 million. However, if we also include the private DOT token sales from 2019 and 2020, we can estimate that more than $200 million in total was raised through DOT token sales.
5 million DOT tokens, or 50% of the Polkadot total supply, was sold during the initial coin offering in 2017. An additional 500,000 DOT was sold during the 2019 private sale.
The Web3 Foundation didn’t disclose how many DOT tokens were sold through the 2020 private sale. If we assume that the 2020 Polkadot private token sale raised $43.3 million and the tokens were sold at approximately $125 apiece, we can calculate an estimate that about 346,400 DOT was sold during this sale.
Keep in mind that the number of DOT in circulation has increased by 100x during the redenomination in August 2020. In other words: 1 DOT purchased at a price of $125 in the 2020 token sale is now 100 DOT purchased at a price of $1.25.
During the Polkadot ICO in 2017, 5 million DOT tokens were sold. This represented 50% of the initial DOT supply (10 million tokens).
The Polkadot ICO in 2017 accepted ETH during the token sale. In the 2020 private DOT token sale, payments were accepted in BTC.
The Polkadot ICO was organized by Web3 Foundation, a Switzerland-based organization that continues to play an important role in the Polkadot and Kusama ecosystems. The organization sold Polkadot coins to fund project development.
